San Bernardino County
San Bernardino County is the largest county in America's lower
49 states coming in at over 20,000 square miles. The only county
larger is the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in Alaska, which is classified
as an unorganized borough area. Otherwise, by area, San Bernardino
County itself is larger than nine U. S. states.

If one is to combined the square mileage
of Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts and Rhode Island,
San Bernardino County is still larger.

Even though San Bernardino County is the largest county in the
state of California, it is only fourth in population at approximately
2 million people.
In 1810, San Bernardino was named after Saint Bernardino of Siena,
an Italian preacher, by Father Francisco Dumetz. San Bernardino
County stretches from the Greater Los Angeles area to Nevada encapsulating
the Mojave National Preserve, Death Valley, Joshua Tree National
Park, Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake to name a few.
A few other places of interest in San Bernardino County include
the Calico Ghost Town near Barstow and Amboy Ghost Town near Twentynine
Palms, Zzyzx Road and settlement and the Goldstone Observatory operated
by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the Mojave Desert.
Three minor league baseball teams make their homes in San Bernardino
County. The High Desert Mavericks, Inland Empire 66ers and Rancho
Cucamonga Quakes all compete and entertain the fans locally.
For those who like car racing in San Bernardino County, the California
Speedway in Fontana is the place to go. For those who would like
to get their need for speed met on the ski slopes, San Bernardino
County has several locations to accommodate this need including
Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Mountain High, Mammoth, Mount Baldy, Rim
Nordic and several others.
The industries in San Bernardino County number nearly 1 million
with services, retail and government holding up the top three. San
Bernardino County is also known for its agriculture with milk, cattle,
eggs, nursery and alfalfa heading up the top five.
San Bernardino County also hosts seven different airports with
the largest being Ontario International Airport. Though much smaller,
the Chino Airport is known for hosting several well-publicized air
shows.
As part of the Inland Empire, San Bernardino County is an area
of great growth in California, With the housing market going wild
in California in recent years, affordable housing can still be found
in some of the growing cities of San Bernardino County. And, one
doesn't need to flee to the desert either to find reasonable home
prices near good schools, parks and other attractions and amenities.
